Thermal performance has become a key part of specifying aluminium windows. But for installers, the headline U-value is only part of the story.
The frame, thermal break, glazing specification, window size and installation detail all influence how a finished window performs.
Understanding those factors helps you specify the right system, avoid problems on site and give customers accurate advice.
Why Does Aluminium Need a Thermal Break?
Aluminium is strong, durable and allows manufacturers to create slimmer profiles capable of supporting large areas of glass. The drawback is that aluminium is also highly conductive.
Without thermal separation, heat can travel easily between the internal and external sections of the frame.
Modern aluminium windows solve this with a thermal break. Typically manufactured from a low-conductivity material such as polyamide, the thermal break physically separates the inner and outer aluminium profiles.
This reduces heat transfer through the frame and allows modern aluminium systems to achieve significantly better thermal performance.
For installers, the important point is simple: not all aluminium systems perform equally. The design and efficiency of the thermal break matters.
Understanding U-Values
A U-value measures the rate at which heat passes through a building element. It is expressed as W/m²K.
The lower the U-value, the better the thermal performance.
But there is an important distinction when comparing window specifications.
Uw refers to the performance of the complete window, including the frame and glazing.
Ug refers specifically to the glazing.
Uf refers to the window frame.
This matters because quoting an impressive centre-pane glass value does not tell you how the complete window will perform.
When comparing aluminium window systems for a project, installers should therefore look at the whole-window U-value and the conditions under which it was calculated, rather than relying on the best number on a datasheet.
Does Triple Glazing Automatically Mean Better Performance?
Triple glazing can reduce heat loss, but it isn’t automatically the correct specification for every job.
The additional pane can improve thermal performance, but it also increases the weight and thickness of the glazed unit.
That can affect:
- Maximum sash sizes and weights
- Hardware requirements
- Handling and installation
- Overall project cost
- The window system required
For some projects, a well-specified double-glazed aluminium window may provide the required performance without the additional weight and cost of triple glazing.
The specification should be driven by the project’s requirements — not simply by the assumption that more glass is always better.
Thermal Performance and Condensation
Good thermal performance can also help reduce the risk of condensation forming on the internal surfaces of a window.
Condensation occurs when warm, moisture-laden air meets a sufficiently cold surface.
A poorly insulated aluminium frame can become significantly colder internally. A well-designed thermal break reduces heat transfer through the profile, helping the internal aluminium surface remain warmer.
However, installers should be careful when discussing condensation with customers.
Condensation is not automatically evidence of a defective window.
Indoor humidity, ventilation, external temperatures, glazing performance, installation and the surrounding building fabric can all contribute.
That distinction is particularly important in highly insulated modern properties, where inadequate ventilation can allow moisture levels to build quickly.
Installation Still Matters
You can specify a high-performance aluminium window and still compromise its performance through poor installation.
Installers should pay particular attention to:
- Continuous perimeter sealing
- Insulating the gap between the frame and structure
- Correct positioning of the window within the opening
- Appropriate fixings and installation materials
- Maintaining drainage and ventilation paths
- Following the system manufacturer’s installation requirements
The window and the building envelope need to work together.
A thermally efficient frame cannot compensate for significant gaps, poorly insulated junctions or incorrect detailing around the opening.
What Should Installers Check Before Ordering?
Don’t specify an aluminium window from one performance figure.
Look at the complete requirement.
Check the whole-window U-value, glazing specification, maximum sash dimensions and weights, security requirements, weather performance and installation conditions.
